Nicola Banks wins Making a Difference Award

The award recognised her motorbike taxi savings and employment scheme.
Dr Nicola Banks, from the Global Development Institute, won the ‘outstanding contribution to social enterprise (emerging’) at the Making a Difference Awards. The awards are hosted by the Office for Social Responsibility at The University of Manchester and recognise members of staff who make an impact on the social well-being of our communities and wider society.
Nicola won the award for her working into combat youth unemployment amongst her research participants in Tanzania. In partnership with a local NGO, she set up a savings scheme, helping people to purchase a motorbike taxi and enhance their incomes. After six months of saving, the savings group have purchased their second bike.
