Photo competition: Transnational migration and Covid-19 in Latin America

This project includes a photo competition and virtual exhibition on the theme of migration and Covid-19 in Latin America.

We aim to document the voices and images of migrants living in Latin America through the Covid-19 pandemic. The competition sought submissions from migrants from any country in the world living in or moving across Latin America as well as migrant organisations from any country in Latin America (South America, Central America and the Caribbean). The photo competition ran in May-June 2021. Photos could have been taken between March 2020 and April 2021. A panel of experts, comprising migration specialists as well as journalist photographers evaluated the submissions. Three awards were made:

1st place (£750) - Verónica Anais Montoya (Venezuela)

2nd place (£500) - Carla Bravo (Bolivia)

3rd place (£250) - Bruna Curcio (Brazil)

Special mention - Tom Niño Roman (Peru)

A selection of the entries will be exhibited (virtually).

A selection of the entries will also be printed as a set of cards, to be used in educational settings and to generate awareness about migration in general and how migration has been affected by Covid-19.

This project is led by:

We would also like to acknowledge the participation and support of visual anthropologist Dr Verónica Castro who, together with designer Nuno Matos, designed the set of cards. Verónica also participated in the selection process and translated all the material. Verónica also participated in the selection process and translated all the material to/from Portuguese. We would also like to thank Emilia Thomas Calderón for help with translating material from Spanish into English.

We thank the SEED Social Responsibility Catalyst Fund, University of Manchester, for providing the necessary funds to make this project come to fruition.
