I chose to study at The University of Manchester because of its world renowned reputation, excellent development programmes and the beauty of the campus.

Why did you choose your particular course?

I chose Public Policy and Management because it is my aim to make a difference in my country through public sector reform and creating policies that are sustainable and aids in national development. For my dissertation I did research on public management reform policies and how they impact on improving service delivery in the electricity sector. This research was important to me because it is a facet of public sector reform I hope to assist with in the future in the Anguilla Public Service.

Has your qualification helped you in your career? 

When I returned to Anguilla after finishing my degree I went back to my old position as an Accountant and started applying for opportunities. Within two months I was selected by a panel for my current position based on my qualifications and experience in the public service and in finance.

Was your degree funded by a scholarship or donor?  

Yes, Foreign Commonwealth Development Office, Chevening Awards. Being awarded this scholarship removed an immense degree of stress thinking about how I would have funded my postgraduate studies and allowed me to not have to worry about such during my duration at Manchester

What is your best memory from your time at Manchester? 

My best memory from my time at Manchester would definitely be interacting with the amazing support staff and lecturers. I never had a bad experience and always felt like everyone wanted me to excel and really cared about my wellbeing. For this very reason is why I have been recommending Manchester to people thinking about studying in the UK from my home country.

Do you have any tips or advice for current or prospective students? 

My biggest tip for current students soon completing their degree is to prioritise rest and wellbeing after graduation. This is important in becoming your best self before going into the work of work. Also use your connections that you made during the year at university to your advantage when it comes to applying for jobs and levelling up in life. Always go after the opportunities that ignite a fire within you and never give up on yourself!
